when you say without modifications, what do you mean?

running widest wheel/tire combo possible but still staying inside the fenders, will require at the minimum rolling the fenders.

the key to fitting the widest wheels possible on any vehicle is to stay at or less than the oem tire/wheel diameter and to use tires that sit square on the wheel (no bulge).

a 9" wheel with a +35 offset along with a 255 tire with the correct aspect ratio will fill the rear 3g wheel wells and sit flush with the fender.

up front, use an 8.5" +45 wheel. depending on the tire brand, you can run up to a 255 tire. some 255s will bulge on an 8.5, some won't.

so if I get a 5x114.3 19x9" +35 on the rear will I need spacers? and the only thing I need to do is rolling my fenders?

and 5x114.3 19x8,5" +35 will fit in front? (or do I need 8")

yes.

don't run anything wider or taller than a 255/30.

yes.

it'll stick out roughly 10mm beyond the fenders, but a fender roll will hide it.

you can run a 255/30 on it too.

I have wheels I just bought that this newbie mechanic claims won't fit on my gs. The guy I bought it from already checked the fitment and say's they're fine. He also does not know what tire size would fit if possible. The rims are 17 x 8.5 +35 offset..According to the chart above. 225/45/17 is the way to go? would that be the better choice than going 235/45/17?

allright thank you very much, than wich spacers are the best to buy (I live in holland and we don't got them here for a 3G. so I need to order them in USA.)
i'm so sorry. i misread your question.

you DO NOT need spacers in the rear.

the setup will work as long as you go by the tire guidelines i posted.

Motegi ff7

Hey guys, the info at the begining of this thread is helpful but i don't want to order the wrong wheels and tires. Would appreciate if someone could verify if Motegi ff7 18' width : 7.5 with an offset of 45 and bolt pattern 5 x 114.3 would go on an 01 2001 GT. Any suggestions on tires ?

Those will fit no problem. Get 225/40/18 tires, those are the most commonly used. You could get 1 size wider, 235/40/18 tires if you want. These will be almost the exact same size as the stock wheel and tire setup

Thanks for the input. Are thos the thickest i can go? i want something that fits flush with the fenders but nice and thick.
Those wheels are a pretty high offset, and it's only a 7.5" wide wheel. 245/40/18 will scrape the rear suspension components. Maybe 245/35/18 would work but i cant say for certain. Are you lowered by chance? because that will make it not possible to get as wide tires

I'm a firm believer that form has got to follow function. If you're making less than 230hp to the wheels, a 225mm wide tire will be perfectly sufficient. If you want to go with a 235mm tire and you're making < 230whp, you're only hurting your car's ability to accelerate due to having heavier tires with too much rolling resistance. When I used to run 215/50-17 Toyo T1-S's, I had no need for a wider tire but when I lowered the car, 215/50-17 became too tall a tire and I needed something with a little smaller overall diameter, which is why I switched to 225/45-17. If I didn't need 225's to avoid rubbing, I'd still be on 215's. For an 18" diameter, though, the selection of 215/45-18 tires is very limited and insanely expensive, which is why I'd have to recommend 225/40-18 with a load rating of at least 90.

Yeah, sticking to 17"s would be sensible since your car will accelerate, brake, and turn faster than it would with heavier 18" wheels. 225/50-17 is too tall a tire. If you want 225's in a 17" tire, stick with 225/45-17.

I've been reading the thread and think I have been able to make some sense of the wheel tire combo but the offset calculation has thrown me off.

I've got a lowered 3g pushing close to 400whp and I need better traction up front. I was looking at 235/40 18 on the front with 8.5 wheels w/ 40 offset and the same if it would fit the rear but I'm not sure if that combo would clear the rear. The car has only been lowered about 1.2 inches.

I'm currently running 225/40 18 right now but don't recall the offset. I've had those rims for quite a while and no rubbing problems at all.

Is there a wider combo I can run safely? I know what the chart reads but again, the offset is the the mystery part of the game. Is a 40 offset enough? I would like the tires flush with the outside of the wheel well but not stick beyond it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Seriously? This is what an 8.5" +40 offset wheel looks like on a 3G's back axle, and that's not even with a tire mounted. Way too close for comfort for me.

that's the same clearance as the 16x8 +46 wheels i used to run, and more clearance than the 17x8.5 +46 i test fit with a single washer on each stud as a spacer and 255/40 tire.

since the 18" tires are going to have a stiffer sidewall and he's limiting himself to a 235, it'll fit without rubbing.

if peace of mind is what's needed, run a 3-5mm spacer.

The final answer was...

I ended up going with 18x8 w/ a 40 offset and got the 'full' look I was trying to achieve. My previous wheels were 18x7.5 w/ 40 offset; I didn't realize that the .5 would appear to make a difference.

I ended up installing a set of the Enkei RPO3's with a set of Toyo TR1's - 225x40 18. The clearance was fine.

Not sure how to post pics so this is a second attempt...
